In Nigeria, as in most other West African countries, all movement of barges, tugs and support vessels into and out of bases, channels and waterways are subject to government rules and regulations. Compulsory booking and recording at the relative law enforcement agencies is required.
Considering the daily cost of rig activity, it is essential that efficient and secure measures be taken while supplying material to and from operational areas in offshore or swamp locations. It is advantageous that the base operator acts as agent of these vessels in order to:
Facilitate timely clearance of vessels (from the authorities) in and out of the bases;
Avoid delay in operation and documentation;
Improve management of supply operations through the coordination of agency and logistic activities at the bases;
Port Captains, based at the jetty, coordinate all movement of support vessels.
